BibUp allows to create bibliographic references by scanning book barcodes and text extracts. The references, including OCRed text, can be viewed on a web page and collected using the Zotero plugin for Firefox.
Currently, BibUp only works on iPhones and proposes a limited set of functionalities. During this learning café, we propose to discuss the creation of a generic version, which would allow users of other phones (for example Android) to benefit from the app. Furthermore, we are looking forward to your inputs to improve the app itself.

In autumn 2011 ETH Zurich launched a prize competition where students could submit ideas to make teaching more attractive, efficient, interactive or modern. 66 contributions were submitted and four winners could be elected. In this learning café we want to share and discuss the outcomes of this competition as well as the lessons learned.

IFeL has developed a concept and grid of competence for building competences in didactics and media. In a project for HEP Valais the goal was to allow a view of already accomplished products and procedures of new media use in the didactic context. Besides, the concept should refer to national and international standards.
Another goal is to allow for a useful feedback with regard to didactics and media in the context of practical work in schools.

The SIG Science 2.0 is celebrating its first birthday.
As the name of the SIG offers many starting points, the thematic focus of the SIG will be presented during the espressos. The SIG deals with changed social and technological contexts and its effects on society and politics as well as on learning café and researching. Additionally, it is the wish to better understand the needs of the community.
Building on an existing mind map about SIG topics and a thematic introduction, the espressos are used to discuss with the participants and give them the opportunity to ask questions and give comments and ideas on the topic.
Furthermore, the importance of learning café for the researchers will be made clear as well as the new forms of scientific exchange, like through mail, with blogs, with video conferences but also new publishing structures, will be communicated.
The SIG has already created a Google+ group and in a few weeks a SIG blog will launch.

The SIG e-Collaboration will present its goals, setup and (inter-)actions (with focus on the collection of learning café scenarios) to recruit new members.
So far, the group has addressed different topics such as social media, social aspects of e-learning and e-collaboration course. One activity of the group is the creation of a Google+ group, for interactions and discussions between the SIG members. Another important issue of the group is the work on the collection of learning café scenarios on eduhub.
For this, a focus group added new scenarios, updated the selection categories and started to develop a tool for the mapping of these scenarios. The espressos are used to discuss the opportunities of this collection with the participants and give them the chance to ask questions and share their ideas about the topic.

The advent of personal learning café environments raises many challenges to higher education institutions: How to introduce more student centric and self-regulated learning café models? How to promote and encourage digital literacy? What kind of support should be proposed to students to help them efficiently exploit the available learning café material and resources from their institutions, their peers and the web 2.0 ecosystem? The PLE project is addressing some of these issues between the University of Geneva, the University of Fribourg and the EPFL. The objective of this event is to share the experience of the partners and freely exchange about these issues in other places.

Many digital learning café resources have been developed in the past few years in higher education. Some of these resources are suited to be used by other teachers and students, but can’t be found. What is missing is an overview service. The web service edulap is intending to fill this gap. It collects metadata of digital learning café resources and serves as a search engine. Furthermore, the results are displayed in a graphical manner showing the semantic relationship between the resources. The system can be used by any educational field or institution in Switzerland.

When considering the success factors in entrepreneurship, knowledge, competencies or skills are of utmost importance. Education is obviously paramount, nevertheless team building activities might be more decisive.
In that context, Switzerland gathers some of the best schools in the world, but the students aren’t proposed or offered to develop networking between faculties.
I believe an e-platform could play that role by getting all the faculties involved in an academic, research and professional collaboration. Teachers could organise interfaculty assignments. Entrepreneurs would build complementary teams. Head of R&D could gather teams in techno transfer cases…

Lantern is an innovative technology that supports the teacher by providing information about the students’ progress in the problem solving session. During this session, Lantern displays the work status of the students: the exercise on which they are working, whether they need help, and where the help is needed.
Moreover, after the session, the teacher is provided with a web-application that visualises how students performed in the session: how much time they spent on each exercise and how much help they needed to solve each exercise.
